Hello, I just had twin boys on monday June 30th. They were 9 weeks early and are currently in the nicu. I am pumping breast milk for them. I am having really bad back pain that is interfering with my sleep so i contacted my midwife thursday at 1 am and she was supposed to send a prescription in and never did..i called again mid afternoon and never got a call back..last night i was so desperate to sleep i took a pill called flexeril and didn’t think nothing of it until my husband mentioned it could be in the breast milk and now i’m really scared to give them my milk not knowing if it will harm them in any way. I only took 1 10 mg. could it hurt them? how long until it’s out of my system? please someone help..i’ve contacted the lactation specialist and i’m waiting for her to call but am trying to get some other answers in the meantime. thanks in advance.

Anything you ingest will be in the breast milk, absolutely!!!!!
Mention it to the nurse/doctor who is taking care of the babies, if they are giving your milk to them and see what they suggest.
If you are pumping and freezing it, I would just get rid of it.
Ask some one at the hospital though, don’t take anyone’s word on here. These are your babies you are talking about.

You need to ask your mid wife or a dr. but there is something i found on the internet.

“Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

The effects of Flexeril during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. It is not known if Flexeril appears in breast milk. However, cyclobenzaprine is related to tricyclic antidepressants, and some of those drugs do appear in breast milk. If Flexeril is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding your baby until your treatment is finished.”

Not a big problem, discard the breast milk until your pain is back. When the pain is back, the medicine is sufficiently out of your system. Now, as a tip, you might want to see a chiropractor for the back pain. It seems that I managed to get my hip and several vertebrae out of place when I gave birth, which is what caused my back pain. I had a desire for pain pills long after the birth of my third child. The chiropractor fixed the problem in 15 minutes, and the pain was gone.
